Career and Technology Education Department of HISD
Texas, one the largest states in America, boasts many claims. It is the longhorn cattle state, the state with more oil than other in America, its Mexican American traditions are legendary. It is now also considered a smart place for those looking for a comprehensive technical education. If interested in a new career which combines both academic as well as technical know how, then the city of Houston is offering great incentives to enroll in their local school district, the Houston Independent School District, in order to take part in their newly designed CATE program.
CATE, which stands for Career and Technology Education, was developed as an answer to many industries needs for highly trained, technically proficient employees. Their calls for help to the local school systems were answered in the form of new academic programs designed to train students in fields that were new, and which would help meet the new demands of the global economy. CATE, which was begun by the Houston Independent School District a few years ago, provides academic programs that are essentially hybrids: There are majors offered in agricultural technology, science technology, and media technology. There are majors which focus on health science fields as well as in human development. In addition CATE provides classes to help train those interested in careers in security.
The aim of the school division is to help those train for specialities which promise jobs on the other end while also providing much needed skills workers for the workforce.
In addition to the majors they offer, CATE allows students to cross major in straight academic fields, so students may focus on agricultural technology, for example, but may also take classes in the straight sciences or in the arts.
The Texas climate is moderate, and the cost of living is not terribly high by American standards, which is a plus for students looking to get by on a budget.
